Cairn Ghlas is located on the North West coast of Scotland, between Gairloch and Ullapool. It is approximately one and a half hours drive from Inverness. It is situated along a quiet single track road that leads to the coast. The beach at Mellon Udrigle is only 10 minutes walk away and is endorsed by the Marine Conservation Society. This makes it one of Scotland's top beaches and it is included in the Marine Conservation Society's Good Beach Guide. The Society will only recommend beaches in this guide if they meet the highest European water quality standard.

If travelling from Inverness, take the A9 over the Kessock Bridge and follow signs for Ullapool. You do not go to Ullapool but branch off at the Braemore Junction (12 miles before Ullapool) - which is signposted for Dundonnell, Aultbea, Poolewe and Gairloch. Follow this road for approximately 30 miles until you reach the village of Laide. Take a right turn at Laide Petrol Station/Post Office and follow the single track road for two and a half miles to Mellon Udrigle. Opinan is signposted to the left at the post box opposite the beach. Take this road for approximately one mile to Cairn Ghlas, 9 Opinan, Laide, which is the first house on the left past Na Fir Chlis B&B.

Alternatively, if you wish to travel via Torridon and Gairloch take the Kessock Bridge on the A9 from Inverness and initially follow the signs for Ullapool. After Garve take the left hand turn at the junction signposted Achnasheen, Kinlochewe and Gairloch. Follow this road to take the scenic route along the banks of Loch Maree and around the coast from Gairloch to Laide. At Laide take the left turn at the Petrol Station/Post Office and continue as in the previous route above.
